Scope and Content
This collection consists of letters and supporting documentation, books on the art of letter writing, a small miscellaneous grouping of catalogs and photographs, and issues of The Wolf Magazine of Letters from June-July 1979 to Summer Quarterly 1991. The earliest letter, from the Marquise de Sevigne, dates from 1695; while the most recent was signed by entertainer Mike Douglas in 1980. Most of the letters date from the 19th century. The collection, which now numbers 85 letters, will continue to grow; in conjunction with his gift, Mr. Lang established a gift annuity to be used for the maintenance and augmentation of the collection.

Sir
Your ship being now loaded & ready for sea and not having received the Presidents remission for the penalty incurred by her late voyage from Cuba & for which she is now under surance[?]. At your earnest solicitations we have come under Bonds at the District Court for $4500, say four thousand five hundred Dollars, the amount of her valuation. Pursuant to our verbal agreement, we have now to request you will proceed on your voyage to Philadelphia & there consign your ship to our friends Msrs. Joseph S. Lewis & Co. who have our instructions, to deliver up your ship & net proceeds of her freight to the order of your owner Mr. William Dickson, onl[y] receiving his sanction to this transaction & promise of responsibility to us in the event of the final condemnation of your vessel[?].
