This collection consists of the working papers of Hugh S. Cooper, primarily laboratory records and patents, and a small amount of personal papers.

Biographical / Historical

Hugh S. Cooper was well known for his work in the fields of chemistry, electrochemistry and metallurgy. He is recognized as having been the first to produce elemental beryllium in this country in 1916. Cooper founded and named the Kemet Laboratories, a division of Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation; the Beryllium Corporation of America; and Cooper Metallurgical Associates. Over 80 patents have been granted on sole inventions by Cooper for metallurgical processes and apparatus.
