This collection consists of personal papers and business records of Charles Baldwin Sawyer. Sawyer's personal papers include journals, correspondence, photographs and printed matter pertaining to his home, family, travels, career, and his relationship with the family of Charles F. Brush, Sr.

Business records in this collection consist of correspondence, memorandum, printed matter and reports concerning The Brush Laboratories Company, The Brush Development Company, The Brush Beryllium Company and The Clevite Corporation; all companies associated with Sawyer.

Biography of Charles Baldwin Sawyer

Charles Baldwin Sawyer was a Cleveland, Ohio scientist and businessman who figured prominently in the early development of the beryllium and Rochelle salt industries. Sawyer graduated from Yale University and MIT. In 1921, Sawyer and Charles F. Brush, Jr. founded the Brush Development Company. Sawyer also founded the Brush Beryllium Company and was instrumental in the development of modern uses for beryllium in nuclear physics and in rocketry. Charles B. Sawyer held many patents and belonged to numerous scientific societies, including The American Association for the Advancement of Science, The American Chemical Society, The American Society for Metals, The American Physical Society, and The British Institute of Metals.

This collection consists of personal papers and business records of Charles Baldwin Sawyer including records of the Brush Laboratories Company, Brush Development Company, Brush Beryllium Company, and Clevite Corporation.

Statement of Arrangement

This collection is arranged in five series: Series 1: Charles B. Sawyer Personal Papers. 1913-1970; Series 2: Brush Laboratories Company. 1920-1956; Series 3: Brush Development Company. 1920-1955; Series 4: Brush Beryllium Company. 1933-1962; Series 5: Clevite Corporation. 1932-1962. Files are arranged according to the original order created by Sawyer. Occasionally, as business ventures overlapped, Sawyer filed information about one of his companies in the records of another, and, filed information about his companies in his personal papers.

This collection was the gift of Charles B. Sawyer circa 1964.
