Biographical / Historical

Frank Oscar Etheridge was born on December 18. 1897 in Pharsalia, New York to Oscar and Albertina (Smith) Etheridge. Alternately, his birthplace is given as South Otselic, New York. Etheridge studied music at the Institute of Musical Art in New York City, for seven years in Vienna and with private teachers in Paris. For many years, he traveled around the world performing with such musical greats as Duke Ellington, Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins and Cab Calloway. He documented his travels in the unpublished manuscript "A Study in Black and White." (1943) He was the author of "What Became of Race Prejudice?" (1942, 4 editions) as well as numerous poems, songs, essays and articles. Etheridge married Etta __? in ____? and had one son, Jeffrey in 1924.(U.S. census 1940, needs additional documentation.) He moved to Rutland, Vermont in 1952 and married Lucille McGrath(?) ca. 1953. Etheridge died in Rutland in June, 1967
