Scope and Content

From the Collection:

This collection consists of letters and supporting documentation, books on the art of letter writing, a small miscellaneous grouping of catalogs and photographs, and issues of The Wolf Magazine of Letters from June-July 1979 to Summer Quarterly 1991. The earliest letter, from the Marquise de Sevigne, dates from 1695; while the most recent was signed by entertainer Mike Douglas in 1980. Most of the letters date from the 19th century. The collection, which now numbers 85 letters, will continue to grow; in conjunction with his gift, Mr. Lang established a gift annuity to be used for the maintenance and augmentation of the collection.

Confidential

Dear Mr. Alber,

I am very glad to hear from you and I trust that the Alber-Wickes Lecture Agency in its consolidated form is going to weather the hurricane still blowing. I am sure it would be a great mistake for me to come to lecture in the United States while conditions are so bleak. In two or three years - perhaps sooner - everything will be booming again. Of this I have no doubt. And then the same number of lectures will be produced with no more effort for at least double what could be secured now. It rests entirely with the world whether it smashes or recovers, and I think it has a strong interest in chosing recovery. We are quite unshakable here. I shall be glad to hear from you and Mr. Wickes how things are going on. The only thing that matters now is to survive. Those who have come through this pinch will reap the future.

Yours sincerely, Winston Churchill

Louis J. Alber Esq.
