Scope and Content

From the Collection:

This collection consists of letters and supporting documentation, books on the art of letter writing, a small miscellaneous grouping of catalogs and photographs, and issues of The Wolf Magazine of Letters from June-July 1979 to Summer Quarterly 1991. The earliest letter, from the Marquise de Sevigne, dates from 1695; while the most recent was signed by entertainer Mike Douglas in 1980. Most of the letters date from the 19th century. The collection, which now numbers 85 letters, will continue to grow; in conjunction with his gift, Mr. Lang established a gift annuity to be used for the maintenance and augmentation of the collection.

Dear Spalding:

A. Wright was here two or three weeks ago, but, Bibliographer as he is, he could not guess what might be the value of the Bailey. He said he would make some enquiry when he returned to Cambridge: but I have not since heard from him. He is no longer Librarian of his College as you may know but Bursar.

I think that your best way would be to enquire of the British Museum, telling the Authorities about the Book, and also what gives the Autograph in it an especial value. No doubt they have Chatham autographs; but I think I gave you some references with regard to the peculiarity of his (Chatham’s) use of the Book. Not only what is recorded by Charles Butler, but what

Lord Holland told to Moore to the same effect as may be seen in Moore’s Diary, July 25/1819, I think.
