My Dear W. Twisleton,

I have had the pleasure of receiving the copy of “The Handwriting of Junius”, which you were so good as to send me, and hasten to thank you for your kind remembrance. It is very thorough

investigation of the subject, and as interesting as a story by Edgar Poe, who would have greatly delighted in this book, could he have seen it; The Man in the Iron Mask and the authorship of Junius are conundrums that seem to interest all the world

[page 3]

I was extremely sorry to miss you when I was last in London. I called at your door, but was not fortunate enough to find you, I believe you were out of town. The Alabama claims and so far it seems to have got themselves settled at last, for which I am [page 4]

heartily glad. It moves that great questions as well as small may be settled between nations without the Devil’s game of war. With many thanks and great regard, Yours truly Henry W. Longfellow

Hon Edw. Twisleton
