McAuliffe, Anthony C. (1898-1975) Typed document signed. New York, September 21, 1965
Scope and Content
This collection consists of letters and supporting documentation, books on the art of letter writing, a small miscellaneous grouping of catalogs and photographs, and issues of The Wolf Magazine of Letters from June-July 1979 to Summer Quarterly 1991. The earliest letter, from the Marquise de Sevigne, dates from 1695; while the most recent was signed by entertainer Mike Douglas in 1980. Most of the letters date from the 19th century. The collection, which now numbers 85 letters, will continue to grow; in conjunction with his gift, Mr. Lang established a gift annuity to be used for the maintenance and augmentation of the collection.

Dear General McAuliffe:
I am writing to ask you a favor.
It has been World’s custom for many years to produce a special
Christmas book for distribution as a gift to friends of the Company.
This year we plan to produce a book compiled from Christmas letters,
such as your December 24, 1944 letter to your troops, the letter
from the German Commander and your classic reply, copies of which
are enclosed.
We would very much appreciate receiving your permission to use the
above letters in our book. Of course, you will receive a copy of the
book as a token of our thanks.
Please sign one copy of this letter and return it in the enclosed
stamped envelope. We would appreciate a prompt reply, as we hope
to begin production October 10, 1965.
Cordially,
Permission granted: THE WORLD PUBLISHING COMPANY
