The earliest letter, from the Marquise de Sevigne, dates from 1695; while the most recent was signed by entertainer Mike Douglas in 1980. Most of the letters date from the 19th century. Dear Mr. Rickenbacker:
I am writing to ask a favor.
It has been World’s custom for many years to produce a special Christmas book for distribution as a gift to friends of the Company.
This year we plan to produce a book compiled from Christmas letters, such as your letter to you inventor-friend Harry Vissering shortly after World War II, a copy of which is enclosed.
We would very much appreciate receiving your permission to use the above letter in our book. Of course, you will receive a copy of the book as a token of our thanks.
Please sign one copy of this letter and return it in the enclosed stamped envelope. We would appreciate a prompt reply, as we hope to begin production October 10, 1965.
Cordially,
The World Publishing Company

typewritten addendum: As I am no longer with Eastern Air Lines, Inc. having retired December 31, 1963, the paragraph preceding my letter should read:
Shortly after World War II, Eddie Rickenbacker, then [underlined] president of Eastern Air Lines, wrote this Christmas letter to his inventor-friend Harry Vissering living in retirement at Babson Park, Florida.
